Professional Associations & Experience
David L. Knowles earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Weber State College in 1983 and a Juris Doctor Degree from J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 1986. After spending four years as a real estate and construction trial lawyer in Southern California, Mr. Knowles relocated to Utah in 1990 and helped establish Smith Knowles PC law firm in Ogden. Mr. Knowles is admitted to practice law in Utah, California, Wyoming state courts and in the United States Tax Court, Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and United States Supreme Court. Mr. Knowles is Martindale-Hubbell AV rated. He is a Master of the Inn in the American Inns of Court, Rex E. Lee Inn (professional association of ninety judges and lawyers in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Box Elder and Cache Counties), where he has served as President of the Inn and as Inn Counselor. Mr. Knowles also is a member of WealthCounsel, a national organization of estate planning attorneys. Mr. Knowles’ experience as a legal educator includes providing instruction at the American Paralegal Training Center, Columbia College and Weber State University (Business Law Adjunct Professor) and professional and community seminars in the subjects of real property, probate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship and estate planning. He is a past Trustee of the Weber/Davis Estate Planning Council of Utah.

A trombonist, Mr. Knowles has played in the 23rd Army Band (until his honorable discharge), the Ogden Concert Band and the New American Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Firehouse Bones trombone choir. Other interests include Boy Scouting, reading, running, biking and swimming.
