After spending five years as a real estate and construction trial lawyer in Southern California, Mr. Knowles returned to Ogden in 1990 and helped establish Smith Knowles. He is admitted to practice law in Utah, California, Wyoming state courts and in the United States Tax Court, Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and United States Supreme Court. Mr. Knowles is Martindale-Hubbell AV rated. He is a Master of the Inn in the American Inns of Court, Rex E. Lee Inn (professional association of ninety judges and lawyers in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Box Elder and Cache Counties), where he served as President of the Inn (2004-2006) and currently serves as Inn Counselor. Mr. Knowles also is a member of the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys. Mr. Knowles' experience as a legal educator includes providing instruction at the American Paralegal Training Center, Columbia College and Weber State University (Business Law Adjunct Professor) and professional and community seminars in the subjects of real property, probate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship and estate planning. He is a past Trustee of the Weber/Davis Estate Planning Council of Utah.

A trombonist, Mr. Knowles has played in the 23rd Army Band (where he was enlisted for six years followed by honorable discharge) and in the Ogden Concert Band. He is a founding member of the Firehouse Bones trombone choir. An experienced scouter, Mr. Knowles has served for many years as scoutmaster, varsity coach, venturing advisor, district officer and merit badge counselor in the Boy Scouts of America. Other interests include reading, running, biking and swimming.
